This is the survival game we've been waiting for, everyone. Studio Wildcard has just announced ARK: Survival Evolved, an open-world PvP shooter that throws zombies to the side to decompose in favor of something better -- dinosaurs. Yes, ARK is an open-world dinosaur survival game. It's finally happening. Players will be able to walk with the dinosaurs, hunt down dinosaurs for food, or potentially be hunted down for food themselves. Perhaps the best news of all is that ARK: Survival Evolved will be coming to Steam Early Access starting June 2, with plans to come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One upon full release.
It looks like ARK will be heavily influenced by the zombie survival games before it, including DayZ, H1Z1 and particularly Rust. Players start naked and helpless and must struggle to survive in a harsh environment by hunting, harvesting, crafting, researching and building shelters. All the while dealing with intense weather, carnivorous dinosaurs and the constant threat of other players trolling for the lols. That of course is also the main selling point of zombie survival games, and also likely ARK's. That is to say that the sandbox craziness and shenanigans is why these games are great. The gameplay systems are merely tools to enable players to experiment and create their own experiences.
Except ARK will also be creating an entirely unique experience disparate from those zombies survival games. ARKwill feature up to 60 unique dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts, which alone will create a wildly different sandbox. These creatures can be hunted, tamed for pets or mounts (yes, even the T-Rex), or toyed with in a myriad ways. ARK will also feature several new systems, including persistent "ecosystems" for land, sea, air and underground. All of this part of a grander experiment that allows players to climb from primitive stone-age technology to modern electric and beyond to who knows what comes next. ARK's "Survival Evolved" subtitle has multiple meanings, but the most significant is how it's changing the survival game for the better. Okay, maybe the most significant is the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are awesome.
